Going into the summer, we know the big names like Kevin Durant, and Lebron James who are going to be free agents. Laker fans all know that we have no shot at landing either guys, but there will be many free agents who are worth taking a shot at.
Centers:
The Lakers need a lot of size going in the 2016-2017 season, and Hassan Whiteside, or Al Horford can help tremendously. Both players are unrestricted free agents and can walk from they're teams if they would choose to. I think that Whiteside has the more upside and is a double-double machine, but Horford can spread the floor with his shooting ability. Going after a center in free agency will all depend on the NBA lottery on May 17th. If the Lakers cannot land in the top two spots in the draft, then they have to find a center who is on the market.
Small Forwards:
With Kobe Bryant retiring, and Metta World Peace most likely gone, Lakers need a lot of help at the small forward position. Anthony Brown played backup to Kobe at the forward position last season, but Lakers need to find a good starter. Free agent players the Lakers should think about going after is, Nicolas Batum, Harrison Barnes, & possibly Marvin Williams. Barnes is the only one who is a restricted free agent, and is going to expect a lot of money in free agency, and the Warriors may want to hang onto him. With the league moving to a 3-point shooting contest, I think a guy like Williams can help out the most, but he may not leave Charlotte. I almost forgot about Nick Young since he was nonexistent the whole season, but he'll be gone next year!
Guards:
I believe the Lakers need some more help with their guard play. Re-signing Jordan Clarkson is a must, as he worked well with D'Angelo Russell late in the season. If I'm the Lakers, I stay away from DeMar DeRozan in free agency. He wants max player money and has a terrible shooting percentage, so the Lakers need to stay away from him. Many people are unsure about D'Angelo Russell being in the Lakers future, and we did not get to see a full season of his play thanks to Byron Scott. Potential free agent guard the Lakers could go after is Mike Conley. He brings leadership, and has grown into a really good point guard, but he may not want to leave Memphis.
This free agency summer may be a fun show to watch, as there are a lot of smaller name free agents hitting the market. The Lakers will have over 50 million to spend this summer, so they need to throw some money around!
Thats my 2 cents!
